Fitness Warriors Mentor Spotlight: Terrica Woolridge

2016 mentorsA mentor, by definition, is an experienced and trusted adviser. They are a key ingredient to the success of the Fitness Warriors program, part of Sports Backers’ ‘Keep It Moving’ initiative, which trains community members to lead fitness classes in our region’s most vulnerable communities. Mentors work one-on-one with Warriors to ensure they’re growing both as technical fitness professionals and as effective community leaders. And our mentors know their stuff. They come with impressive resumes, respected reputations, and a track record of making a difference for the Richmond region’s health and wellness.

Let’s get to know one of our mentors (and alumni of the Fitness Warriors program!), Terrica Woolridge, and learn about what she offers to the Fitness Warriors in training!

Why did you want to be a mentor for the Fitness Warriors program?

As an alumni, you have unique insight about the program. I wanted to assist the third class as they navigated through this amazing experience. I wanted to be able to share relevant examples and experiences, resulting in the overall success of the program. I benefited so much from having a mentor during the program, so as a graduate, it seemed like a no-brainer to come back and impart the same wisdom given to me.Screenshot_2016-10-21-12-26-03-1

What is your favorite group exercise modality? Any specific favorite workout moves?

I am loving interval training right now! The workouts last 30-45 minutes, and participants continue to burn calories for about 24 hours after the workout ends. With 1-2 HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts per week, participants can see results, and that is very encouraging and motivating feedback to share.

Tell us about a time that made you proud to be a Fitness Warriors mentor.

The first training day for the current class of Warriors made me very proud. Meeting the group and seeing their passion, ambition, and spirit solidified the fact that I had made the right decision when I chose to become a mentor. This group continues to impress me, and I am continuously proud of them.

What advice would you give to people just starting their fitness journey?

Know that this is a journey towards a healthy lifestyle. Have realistic expectations as well. Change takes time, and you are worth the patience, commitment, consistency, and sacrifice needed for change to happen. Your health is your choice, and the choices you make now WILL improve your life. You can do this!
