Fitness Warrior Guest Blog: Total Body Fitness For Women

By: Taliah Muhammad, Fitness Warrior

I am so honored to be a Fitness Warrior. This wonderful program, which is part of Sports Backers’ Keep It Moving initiative, allows me to impact my community through fitness, which is one of my passions. When applying for the program, I remember being asked what community I would serve if I were selected. As a Muslim woman, I immediately thought of my female family and friends who struggle with making their health and fitness goals a priority. As a mom of six I know how easy it is to serve your family, community, and job, all while neglecting the body that helps you do it all! Talk about being counter productive!

Not comfortable in a gym or fitness center setting? No problem! This class is held in a room full of ladies just like you who want a great workout in a comfortable atmosphere. No place to take your children while you workout?  That’s not an excuse either, mama! Children are always welcome in our classes. They can even work out right beside you!

When I started to share my vision with my fellow Fitness Warriors, family, and friends, I received positive feedback and realized that a class like this, offered free of charge, would be great for the community. Soon after getting such an encouraging response, I reached out to my assigned host site, the Ettrick Community Center. The administrator and staff there have embraced the idea of a women’s-only class and have gone to great lengths to help create the environment that I envisioned! I wasn’t aware of it, but they had already heard so many great things about the Fitness Warrior program and were excited to work with us. Things seemed to be in perfect alignment to make my vision become a reality!

After months of planning, the first class was held on September 27th, 2016. We had 11 participants and we worked it! Every class since then has had more participants, primarily due to word of mouth! I am so happy that my class has inspired women to take control of their health and fitness. Each time we meet for class there’s this electricity flowing through the air and I know we are doing something special.  ettrick pic

If you are in the area, I encourage you to join us every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-6:30pm at The Mayes-Colbert Ettrick Community Center. As I tell my participants, just bring a towel, some water, and your ENERGY and you are ready to go! I hope to see you there soon but if my class location or time doesn’t work for you, check out the Warriors class schedule. There are over 40 FREE classes happening all across our region every week!
